THE DIVISION BELL
Me: “ So what is happening with the next Project? …”
Boss: “ We are hoping that you will take a significant responsibility… Blah!! Blah!! Blah!! ”
Me: “ What’s in for me?”
Boss: “ I met with the management few days ago and we are working on a transition plan for you to move to the next level.”
Me: " To the next level?"
Boss: " Yes, next level."
Me: “ But, unfortunately... ”
Boss: “ But?”
Me: “ I am quitting.”
Boss: “ Quitting?”
Me: “ I am here for the next 1 month. June 4th will be my last day. I am headed to Business School. “
Boss: “ Business School?”
Me: “ Michigan Business School. “
Boss: (with a big smile) “ Good. Congratulations!! Great School.”
Me: “ Thank You. “
Me: “ I thought that it is my responsibility to tell you guys a month ahead so that we can work on a smooth transition for the team. “
Boss: “ I am very happy for you. We will miss you. “
Yes! I dropped the bomb today. Only a month left before I head to mid west to spend the few days before school with Ria. My living room is empty – one of the couches already sold. A bookshelf has been replaced with a bunch of books stashed in the corner. The study table is gone replaced with a side table – the printer carelessly lingering on the floor. (I never realized that the living room was so spacious.) The “Things to Do” List is glaring at me from the bare wall above my laptop. I can hear the medieval fan buzzing from the ceiling and this strange feeling of agoraphobia as the clock ticks away to midnight.
And then this sudden flashback in my mind of the lyrics from Division Bell, so appropriate:
“Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun…
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some sleeping tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times.”
