MLP contd...

The week is almost over. It was fun – real fun attending the 3 classes in the last 2 days. First it was an Ethics Class taught by Timothy Fort; the case was regarding sniffing glue (“Resistol” manufactured by H.B. Fuller) by street children in Honduras. Second was the Citizenship Class, where we participated in a classic “Game Theory” Problem followed by a case analysis of Kofi Annan’s plea to US companies to invest in the AIDS crisis. Today’s Class was more exciting, taken by Kennedy, who moved to Michigan from HBS last year – it was “Globalization”, the possible rise of the 4 developing countries termed as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, China and India) in the next 50 years (taking over G6). Goldman Sachs predicts that BRIC will constitute 50% of the GDP output of the entire world by 2050, China being the largest economy closely followed by India.

I have met such an amazing bunch of people from all over the world in the last few days – Argentina, France, Switzerland, Mexico, Kenya, China, Taiwan etc. etc. that I feel almost blessed to be a part of this community. Till now, everyday we have had a social gathering, yesterday was exceptionally crazy. After the Class went to Dominick’s, was there for 2 hours, came back to Student Lounge, went back to Dominick’s, had dinner in Jimmy John’s and then met again MBA1s at Rick’s. I have to really curtail the socializing urges and prioritize my schedule or else it will be very easy to get lost and get defocused – But frankly I am trying to maintain a balance and get the best of both worlds. Well in fact, Prof. Kennedy mentioned a very valid point - 5 years after graduation your classmates will hardly remember who graduated with distinction and who graduated without.

We are just left with one session of OCD workshop tomorrow and then we have the Saturday and Sunday off. From next week starts the Section Introductions and Team Building Exercises. We also have a few prominent luminaries lined up to speak to the incoming class – the list includes Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE and James McNerney, CEO of 3M.

Today we are headed to Score keepers.
