Orkut - the online community

Denying the internet is denying the future – its power is colossal. Google is too aware of it and has unleashed the forces. First it was the fastest search engine; then came the “pay only when clicked” advertisement; followed Gmail and Blogger; and finally – Orkut.

Haven’t heard the term Orkut before, just run a search on Google. Orkut is an online social networking service, designed by a Google engineer, Orkut Buyukkokten, as a personal project. [Google persuades every engineer to spend 20% of their time working on personal projects – How entrepreneurial!!] It currently has more than one-million subscribers all connected by the phenomenon of “friends of friends”. The idea is astounding.

Google was initially rumored to be on the verge of acquiring Friendster, another social networking service. But, it quietly launched Orkut. Orkut is currently not officially connected with Google as such, though the small line appears in the left corner of the Orkut homepage – “in affiliation with Google”. In other words, Orkut is not generating any revenues for Google, and Google hasn’t committed to it as yet.

Though slow compared to Friendster, Orkut has the distinct advantage of a community of close-knit friends, since it is invitation only. [Friends can invite friends to join the community, you cannot sign up without invitation.]

Rock on Google.
