Internships...
The internship season is round the corner and things are heating up right now. After all everything boils down to this; the main reason for an investment of $100,000. I have kind of short-listed a few firms and concentrating on the applications and fit part. I am excited, seriously anxious for the internship interviews to kick off. The first set of closed lists will be out by the first week of January. By the end of February, I will know my fate; it will kind of decide my post-MBA career. I just wonder when all this running will stop, not that I don’t enjoy it, but I would really love to settle down. Ria has moved to a new town with a new job after her PhD and I am currently vacationing here. These two weeks is a good time to reflect what I have learned in the last few months.
The core classes have been extremely helpful to form the foundation – it is so fun to read and understand Wall Street Journal at last. It took me some time to imbibe the jargons and I am happy that I am comfortable with it now. My main agenda for the last few months have been to learn rather than worry about my grades – as long as I learnt I didn’t care about how I did in the exams. I think Finance, Marketing and Strategy were the three most important classes when it came down to understanding the business perspective. World Economy was enormously helpful in comprehending the foreign exchange market and the dynamics of globalization.
I have made tons of friends at school and really enjoyed my experience till date. I can now go to any parts of the world and need not worry about a local friend. I have made friends with people coming from different industries and going to different industries as well. Diversity has always been important to me and Michigan has provided me that.
Coming back to internships, I had a few informational interviews in the last few weeks. Michigan alums have been extremely helpful whenever I have asked for an informational interview. Now I understand how important it is for the alumni to be involved with the school. We have school liaisons in almost every company. I have not been very good with this entire networking business but lately I am catching up. I have decided that as soon as I finish my internship search, I will immediately start networking for full-time. By this time next year, if I am lucky, I will have a full-time offer in my pocket.
I hope everyone is enjoying their vacations. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance.
